<image:title>Our Learning - Four Years of Transforming Indigenous Education - In Lakota culture, four is a sacred number. And as Oceti Sakowin Community Academy (OSCA) marks the beginning of its fourth academic year, its team of Indigenous educators are even more committed to their sacred work: reimagining education through an Indigenous lens. We spoke with OSCA’s Head of School Mary Bowman recently about what it takes to create a space for students to be “unapologetically Indigenous”--and her vision for OSCA’s future.</image:title>

<image:title>Our Learning - Four Years of Transforming Indigenous Education - Talk about the development of your curriculum–what was involved in that process and what does it provide to OSCA students?</image:title>
<image:caption>“When I started designing the school, I was coming from public education–and was still grounded in westernized education. I thought we’d have more traditional education, but just adding culture and language. But through working with NDN Collective, my thinking shifted and became more liberated. Culture couldn’t be an add-on. It had to be the center of everything. For that reason, our curriculum is focused and centered on Lakota Star Knowledge, which connects to seven sacred sites. These sites ground us in our origin story, guided our traditional migration paths, and still sustain our ceremonies and spiritual wisdom. Photo by Angel White Eyes for NDN Collective</image:caption>

<image:title>Our Learning - Four Years of Transforming Indigenous Education - With four years behind you, what do you see as OSCA’s greatest impact–and how do you imagine that impact will grow over time?</image:title>
<image:caption>“I think providing that deep sense of belonging–that’s something that absolutely isn’t the norm for most Indigenous students. I was born and raised here, but in terms of education, I barely ever saw myself in what I was learning. When I did, the representation of Indigenous people was never positive. But I was very fortunate that I was raised in our Lakota culture–and I would go home and hear all these beautiful things from my mom about our language and our beliefs. I was so lucky I had that. I think it’s the reason why I was able to graduate when so many other of my peers dropped out. That's what's different at OSCA. Our students do not feel like they're outsiders in their education as I once did.</image:caption>

<image:title>Our Learning - What changes when the Buffalo return: A conversation with Tanka Fund Executive Director Dawn Sherman - You spoke of the moments when Buffalo return to their homes on Indigenous lands. What happens once they make it home–how does their return impact the ranchers who care for them? How does their return affect the communities and economies to which they are connected? “There are many different shifts that can happen when Buffalo return. It starts with each individual rancher and how they choose to caretake for their Buffalo. We have ranchers who choose to care for small cultural herds with just a dozen or so animals. Their animals aren’t used for commercial purposes; live and die on their homeland. But because of their presence, when there’s an important community event—like someone passing away—they can be used for traditional ceremonies that are vital to community life.”</image:title>

<image:title>Our Learning - What changes when the Buffalo return: A conversation with Tanka Fund Executive Director Dawn Sherman</image:title>
<image:caption>What about the land itself–what is the impact on the land as Buffalo return? “There are significant changes in the land’s health as Buffalo return. Six feet below our feet, there are seed banks just waiting to grow. Because of the way Buffalo wallow, they bring up those seeds, so that native plants and grasses can once again flourish. Eventually, that leads to increased resilience against drought, fires, and flooding. Other wildlife—from the tiniest insects to smaller mammals like prairie dogs and all kinds of birds—benefit as well.”</image:caption>

<image:title>Our Learning - What changes when the Buffalo return: A conversation with Tanka Fund Executive Director Dawn Sherman - As you look forward, where is Tanka Fund going next? What’s exciting for you as you look toward the next decade? '“We’ve just completed a new strategic plan, thanks to the support of our partners at Emergence. It incorporates a wide range of community perspectives on what Tanka Fund could do in the coming decade to continue to lift up Native lands, lives, and economies. There are so many opportunities–and we’re so grateful to be approaching the next decade from a place of abundance.”</image:title>

<image:title>Our Learning - Five reasons to stand with Makoce Agriculture Development on their fifth anniversary! - They are leveraging Indigenous leadership to confront colonial policies and systems</image:title>
<image:caption>After founding the organization, CEO and founder Nick Hernandez successfully navigated centuries-old colonial land policies to secure a historic land lease–land that is now the site of Makoce’s Wóyute Regenerative Production Farm. This land, where the community can now come together to learn about and engage in producing nourishing local foods, is a living symbol of Makoce’s commitment to reclaiming Indigenous resources and traditions through determination and leadership. This 24-acre, dedicated economic development site will become the first business district on the reservation and home to the organization’s development and administrative offices.</image:caption>

<image:title>Our Learning - Five reasons to stand with Makoce Agriculture Development on their fifth anniversary! - They are reawakening Indigenous foods with deep cultural, spiritual, and environmental significance</image:title>
<image:caption>Across the reservation, there has been a resurgence of interest–especially among young people–in rejecting the western diet that has caused such deep harm to Indigenous communities and to the land itself. Over the last five years, Makoce has harnessed that energy. From traditional buffalo harvests to making chokecherry jam, Makoce’s team is creating opportunities for community members to reconnect with traditional foods and reawaken traditional knowledge for future generations.</image:caption>

<image:title>Our Learning - Five reasons to stand with Makoce Agriculture Development on their fifth anniversary! - They are empowering the next generation of Indigenous food system leaders</image:title>
<image:caption>Central to Makoce’s success is its deep investment in community. Through cultural foods workshops, community trainings, and local meat production initiatives, the organization has empowered a new generation of Indigenous producers, educators, and advocates. These community members aren’t just participants—they’re leaders reshaping the local food landscape and inspiring others across Indian Country.</image:caption>

<image:title>Our Learning - Five reasons to stand with Makoce Agriculture Development on their fifth anniversary! - They are taking bold steps to build essential food system infrastructure</image:title>
<image:caption>Makoce doesn’t just run programs—they create lasting, systems-level solutions rooted in Lakota values and community design. A prime example: after nearly three years of research and collaboration, Makoce developed a Master Plan for Pine Ridge’s first Food Hub—a facility to support a local, regenerative food system. It will connect producers like farmers, ranchers, and chefs with the broader community, increasing access to nourishing, local foods. As they build this long-term project, Makoce is also taking immediate steps by piloting a non-asset-based food hub model using existing community resources.</image:caption>

But since then, he’s brought together a team of 15 amazing community leaders–with deep experience in advocacy, food production, research and education, and more–to advance Makoce’s vision. <image:title>Our Learning - Advancing Sovereignty in Indigenous Education - Oceti Sakowin Community Academy</image:title>
<image:caption>Based in Rapid City, South Dakota, the Oceti Sakowin Community Academy is grounded in the thought and philosophy of the people who first walked this land–the Lakota, Dakota, and Nakota people of the Seven Council Fires or great Sioux nation. The Academy offers students an inclusive and diverse education that is driven by rigorous academics grounded in the language, culture, thought and philosophy of the Oceti Sakowin. The curriculum supports students in developing a deep sense of belonging and increasing their levels of engagement and motivation–leading to improved academic outcomes, holistic wellness, strong cultural identities, and confidence. This fall the Academy began enrolling kindergarten students and will add a new grade level each year moving forward.</image:caption>

<image:title>Our Learning - Advancing Sovereignty in Indigenous Education - Mní Wičhóni Nakíčižiŋ Wóuŋspe (Defenders of the Water School)</image:title>
<image:caption>During the Oceti Sakowin Camp resistance on the Standing Rock Reservation, families and community members came together to create their own educational model grounded in Lakota lifeways and the movement for self-determination. The school ran at the camp for nearly five months, serving up to 45 kids at a time and developing and returning to a model of community-based education. When the camp closed, organizers knew that their vision of education needed to continue–and Mní Wičhóni Nakíčižiŋ Wóuŋspe (Defenders of the Water School) was born. Officially relaunched the fall of 2022, Mní Wičhóni Nakíčižiŋ Wóuŋspe is becoming a model for Indigenous, land-based education that is transforming opportunities for young people.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Dakota Wicohan has worked to regenerate Dakota language and lifeways for over two decades. Through the deep commitment of hundreds of community members, Dakota Wicohan is carrying forward the wisdom passed down from culture bearers. As a cultural incubator, it lifts up intergenerational programming grounded in the Dakota values of peace and kinship, creating a circle of language activists, teachers, elders, speakers, and learners prepared to sustain cultural knowledge for future generations. Our team at Emergence is honored to support their vital work in a range of ways:</image:caption>

<image:title>Liz Welch - Liz Welch, MSW Founder & Principal , Emergence LLC Interim Director of Advancement, NDN Collective</image:title>
<image:caption>Liz has dedicated her professional life to shifting power and resources to community-driven organizations. Over the last decade, she has raised more than $90 million for Indigenous-led organizations across the country, advancing their work in culturally-grounded education, food sovereignty, economic development, and more. Her passion is supporting leaders and organizations grow their own capacity to confront unjust systems and accelerate community change. Through a strong curiosity about the impact of large scale systems, Liz recognized early in her career that supporting community-led systems change is the way to building a more just world. From 2014 to 2019, she served as Director of Advancement at Thunder Valley Community Development Corporation, one of the first Indigenous-led CDCs in the country. Liz grew the organization’s budget from under $500,000 to over eight million in just four years and helped develop a groundbreaking model for replacing inequitable, colonial systems with Indigenous, community-based solutions. Since 2018, Liz has continued to support leaders, organizations, and movements working to dismantle the systems and barriers that create inequities. Through founding Emergence LLC, she has partnered with over 40 Indigenous led organizations to advance their missions through strategic advancement and fundraising, operations and infrastructure creation, and leadership development. Liz has supported the start up of 10 new Indigenous led nonprofit organizations over the last 5 years, many of which are thriving and seeing the impact of their work in their home communities already. While continuing to guide Emergence’s work, she also serves as Interim Director of Advancement at NDN Collective, an organization dedicated to building Indigenous peoples’ power. By the close of 2024, NDN will have provided close to $100 million in transformational grant support to more than 700 Indigenous-led organizations and leaders. In her role, Liz is helping to lead efforts to strengthen NDN’s advancement team to support building movement infrastructure for the years and decades ahead–creating systems, tools, and resources needed to impact communities and build Indigenous power. Liz is also a mother of two boys. This continues to be a central component of how Liz sees her work in building a more justworld. The impacts of white supremacy impact climate change, education systems, and policies that will have a great impact on the next generation. Liz is working to build a world where her children are safe, think critically about the world around them, and are avid contributors to their communities and the solutions the world desperately needs all while fostering a fun and dynamic environment for them to grow up in.
